Australia may be regarded as “the lucky country”, but some are luckier than others. Homelessness is an escalating problem as the population grows. Of particular concern is the number of young people sleeping rough.

We pet lovers are a distinct breed. Nothing – and I mean nothing – is too much to keep our animals happy. The lengths some people go to are quite extraordinary. I know this because I have the best little white dog in the world, to whom I dedicate this piece.

When I was in Year 9, I was asked to participate in the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation, which allocates money to charities. One of those charities was Urban Seed. Urban Seed helps educate children about drugs and homelessness, feeds the destitute and supports addicts. This not-for-profit organisation had a major impact on me because of its warm and inviting atmosphere and the work it was doing. All those I came across – namely the staff and those being helped – seemed genuinely happy to be there and I have never forgotten that. I thought it would be the perfect place to speak with someone who works there and gain some more insight into them and what makes the organisation so special.
